Customer: Nuttall Hynes
Client: Highways Agency
Site: M1 motorway, junctions 1 to 4
Value: £9 million
Nuttall Hynes were contracted to install communication cables and equipment in a ducted system along the M1, junctions 1 to 4.
We were brought in four months ahead of the start date to establish the exact highways plant requirements and specification.
Two of our project managers were direct contacts for the Nuttall site, which ensured good communication was maintained throughout the contract. We also allocated three managers, who covered transport, plant and grab lorries/waste. They all made regular site visits, which meant they were on hand to provide Nuttall Hynes’ staff with advice and support when they needed it.
We provided CPCS cards electronically. Operators were also given extra training on how to use the quick hitch devices safely and all of our grab operators were CPCS-trained.
Being involved at an early stage meant there was sufficient time for us to be able to clarify the project needs, allocate highways plant that was less than three years old and provide alternative solutions.
We were also able to custom-build a crane lorry to Nuttall’s specification and ensure the operators’ CPCS details were already on-site before the project started. What’s more, only two breakdowns were reported for over 13,000 machine working hours and there were only two operator ‘no shows’ out of 1,587 operator days as a result of our project involvement.
