Project overview

Customer: McNicholas
Client: Scottish and Southern Energy
Site: Galashiels and Stow
Value: £10 million

Project details

McNicholas were contracted to provide 21kms of access roads, two sub stations and turbine foundations for wind farms in Toddleburn in Galashiels and Longpark in Stow.

The solution

We were asked to meet all of the plant and operator requirements for both of the projects.

Two of our project managers, Merrill Lynch and Rob Allenby, and one of our operator foremen, were appointed to ensure good communication was maintained throughout the entire project.

We supplied plant that was less than two years old and included 12 Volvo EC210s, one Volvo EC290, two Volvo EC360s, 15 Terex TA30s and three Bomag 213 Rollers.

We also hired 32 local operators for the projects. They all had a wealth of experience and were trained by us to Lynch standards, which included how to monitor the safety of the machinery and risk assess the tasks involved.

The result

Our involvement enabled:

  • All site machine requirements and service issues to be dealt with immediately – thanks to our designated project manager, who was on 24-hour call
  • No down time on the 24/7 site – we provided fully trained, competent operators and standby operators
  • Breakdowns to be reduced and health and safety to be increased – due to us providing new machines to the correct specification
  • Environmental standards to be met – as a result of us supplying biodegradable oil and new machines
